| Although being used for years in the treatment of tuberculosis, no data are available in the literature on the safety of pyrazinamide during pregnancy. Accordingly, we aimed to make a first approach to this problem by evaluating the effects of this drug administered during the entire pregnancy of albino rats. Fourty female, EPM-1 Wistar albino rats of about 250 g b.w. were used. Upon conception (day zero of pregnancy) the animals were randomly divided in 4 groups of 10 rats each and labeled as follows. | Some studies have shown that pinealectomized female rats present a large concentration of collagen fibers in the endometrium. The lack of light results in morphologic alterations in the uterine lamina propria and in the muscular layer, reducing thus the uterine weight. | The characteristics of intrinsic muscle fibers in the anterior third of the adult rat tongue were studied employing light microscopy, SEM and high-resolution SEM (HRSEM) methods. For light microscopy, specimens were fixed in Bouin's solution and embedded in paraffin. In order to identify the muscle fibers and bundles of collagen fibers, frontal sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin, azo-carmin and picro-sirius. The results showed that muscle fibers near the lamina propria are fixed with connective tissue, constituting several groups. | This study had the purpose of enlarging the data on the Brazilian people, providing anatomic fundamentals that allow a better comprehension of clinical and pathological states involving the hip joint. Sixty-six human femurs, 33 right and 33 left, were used, coming from the Laboratory of Human Anatomy of the Universidade Paranaense ­ UNIPAR. | En la función del sistema cráneomandibular se reconoce como un factor importante la postura de la cabeza sobre la columna cervical. La estabilidad ortostática del cráneo sobre la columna cervical permite un correcto funcionamiento de este sistema. En un estudio anatomorradiológico de casos, se evaluó la estabilidad ortostática cráneocervical de 45 adultos jóvenes de sexo masculino del grupo étnico mapuche. El análisis se realizó a través de telerradiografías, utilizando el cefalograma de Rocabado para evaluar la posición del triángulo hioídeo, el ángulo posteroinferior y el espacio C0-C1. | The aim of the present study was to determine, by kariometric parameters, the influence of phenytoin, as teratogen, on the epithelial layer of choroid plexus in rats fetuses, using single daily dose ( 75 mg Kg-1 bd.wt.), during gestation GD9 to GD11, and lowest total dose used orally (225 mg Kg-1), to the best of our knowledge. | Two experiments were conducted in order to evaluate the effects of different dietary amino acid and calcium profiles on the bone characteristics of two chicken strains (Avian Farms and Cobb) during the starter phase. | Organophosphorous pesticides are a healh problem worldwide, mostly for agroworkers, which are around 2600 millions of person in the year 2001. Little is known about male reproductive damage elicited by these chemicals. The acute effects of malathion (single intraperitoneal injection), 1/12 the LD50 to mice were analyzed at 1, 8, 16, 35 and 40 days after injection, in terms of spermatogenic cell proliferation and apoptosis and of Sertoli cell compromise as revealed by immunocytochemical detection of CK-18 (cytokeratin). | Forty mature male rats (Wistar strain) were maintained alive for 40 days, separated in four groups of five rats each (Control, L-NAME, L-NAME + Enalapril, L-NAME + Verapamil). Three aortic wall parameters were analyzed, as follows: the Q A(SMN) (the number of the tunica media smooth muscle nuclear profiles per area), the S V(lamellae) (surface density of the aortic lamellae), and the aortic wall thickness (AWT). Rats of the L-NAME group showed high blood pressure and cardiac hypertrophy. The AWT, the Q A(SMN) and the S V(lamellae) showed the same tendency among the groups. | In adult salmon of the sea centres in southern Chile, a jaw deformation (JD) has been identified. It affects the dental and hyomandibular bones, which bend ventrally up to 90° of their normal position. The deformation affects also the dental articular bone. This pathology is related to weight loss and increased mortality of the salmons. | La anormalidad citogenética más común en la leucemia mieloide crónica (LMC) es el cromosoma Philadelphia, producida por la t(9;22), cuya expresión molecular es el gen de fusión BCR-ABL, que codifica proteínas con actividad tirosinquinasa. Según el punto de ruptura de los genes BCR o ABL se produce una proteína de fusión de 210-kD(p210) o 190-kD(p190). La presencia de este gen de fusión en pacientes con LMC tiene implicancia diagnóstica. | El cadmio del aire, agua y alimentos tiene potencial de afectar la salud de las personas, principalmente de aquellas que viven en regiones industrializadas. El cadmio afecta la función placentaria, pudiendo atravesar la barrera trofoblástica y provocar alteraciones en el desarrollo del feto; puede, también, ser excretado por la leche. El organismo es particularmente susceptible a la exposición al cadmio en el periodo perinatal.
